Zane Shumeiko, Leonid Leo

My work is about family connections in four generations.
My son made background paintings and he also wanted to include his actual hand when I made photos of finished works.
I used my hand shape and made collages connecting all pieces with machine embroidery.
Texts are from my parents and all four of my grandparents’ hand writings. Luckily I have conserved some letters from all of them.
Materials: recycled papers, photocopies of letters, threads.

Zane Shumeiko
I am a Latvian artist who uses textiles, machine embroidery, photography and painting in her work. Sewing thread has a special meaning in my works-it is like “Ariadne’s thread” that symbolically links thoughts, desires, dreams and journey between different generations and cultures. This is a point of departure for series of works dedicated to my ancestors.
