Call for entries: Aspects of the Goddess – an exhibition for Rome Art Week 2019

Rome Art Week is a prestigious annual celebration of contemporary art and culture. RAW involves the entire city of Rome with hundreds of exhibitions and open studios showcasing the best of contemporary art to the world.

Counterweave Arts Gallery & Workshop’s theme for RAW 2019 is Aspects of the Goddess. An exhibition exploring this theme will be held in the gallery in Rome and online on the Counterweave website.

Counterweave Arts is built over the site of a temple to the goddess Minerva in one of the oldest parts of the ancient city of Rome. As well as being the patron goddess of Rome, Minerva symbolises strength, wisdom, and creativity. The invention of  the arts, weaving spinning and music were attributed to her.

Minerva’s statue still watches over the city of Rome from the seat of government on the Capitoline hill. There are reminders all over Rome not just of the power and veneration of Minerva, but other ancient goddesses too: Venus, Ceres, Flora, Artemis, the ancient goddesses of Etruria, Egypt and Mesopotamia.

In 2019 more than ever, we need to promote and celebrate all aspects of the Goddess. We think especially of the Goddess as an active force for good, a fierce and compassionate warrior and a powerful source of creativity.

You are invited to submit work in any medium that explores your response to the exhibition theme of Aspects of the Goddess, especially in relation to the issues facing 21st century women.  You may choose any goddess/es from any time and/or any culture.
