Michael Sylvan Robinson, Venus Rising
“Venus Rising: A Contemporary Invocation” is part of my “#urbanfey: protective wear for urban faeries” series, and explores the rising Venus presence needed in our activism and healing trauma stewardship during this time of injustice and environmental crisis. This piece is anchored in a lifetime commitment to feminism and Queer community-building. Hand-stenciled poetic text fragments both within the garment on the lining and on the outer textile collage surface name intentions and affirm a call to loving action. As a contemporary fiber artist, the pieces from my #urbanfey series are created as interventions of healing and activism amidst the oppressive times in which we are living right now, spell-like intentions printed on the fabric of the clothes, reminders of the fragility of our world and evoking a call to healing, to action, to remembrance. Each garment is constructed from a textile collage layered with activist iconography, over-worked with text details and imagery that is Queer, and of the wild, but also inspired by the urban settings of my home landscape.
